An opportunity to Join the Sacred Fire

Our dear friend and spiritual teacher Kahontakwas Diane Longboat has faithfully maintained a Sacred Fire at her Soul of the Mother Lodge in Ontario for decades. Women of Spirit and Faith has been blessed to join her there for ceremony on numerous occasions.
Diane is extending this invitation to spiritually grounded woman in our WSF community and those in other circles and sister organizations:

Dearest Relatives,

We stand at the precipice of survival for not only Mother Earth, indeed for humanity. In these times, faith and fearlessness are called out in each of us to stand in love and a belief that the power of our Creator will defeat all evil.

On December 14-18, 2025, a special convening will occur online known as the “State of the World Global Forum” examining 4 intelligences-- cognitive human intelligence, artificial intelligence, nature intelligence and cosmic intelligence. Once again, spiritual intelligence is not a feature of the discussions but we are told, “embedded" in the four intelligences. We know that embedding often means minimizing the voices of spiritual people and Indigenous peoples worldwide.

Nevertheless, to support the Forum and the impact it will have on those in leadership at all levels, we call out to all women and women-identified Beings to light Sacred Fires of Peace wherever you are in the world and join the Sacred Fire at Soul of the Mother. We invite you to light a candle for the full days of the Forum or as many days as you can. Through this candle, make your prayers and invocations and know that you will be heard by our Great Creator. You can make offerings of water, food, sage, sweetgrass, or cedar and place them on the ground when finished. Let us offer our finest thoughts and words to the Higher Power so that the Minds of human beings can be clear in the pursuit of truth and embrace healing, spiritual guidance and seek protection in these times of great imbalance.

Feel free to share this invitation with other women and networks who would be interested in joining this Sacred Feminine offering.

Some Hints for Maintaining your own Sacred Fire
When we were planning for our Alchemy Too gathering in 2013, Diane reached out to advise that we needed to maintain a Sacred Fire in order to provide protection for the gathering. At first we were confused and intimidated by these spiritual instructions. How do women who live in crowded urban settings, in small apartments, in suburban housing tracts keep a fire burning for weeks at a time? In the decade since then, we have learned how simple it can be.
Here are a few hints:
  • Tall glass religious candles can often be found in most grocery stores -- often near the Hispanic foods like salsa.
  • Sometimes they have images of Guadalupe, Mother Mary or Jesus and sometimes they are clear glass.
  • An 8 inch candle like this will usually burn for about 3 days.
  • Keep your burning candle in a place where there is no flammable material like fabric or paper. One of our founders keeps a candle in an unused bathtub in her home and has been able to maintain a continuous sacred fire in that bathtub for over 9 years. She offers prayers written on scraps of paper arranged in a circle about a foot away from the candle as well as burning sage and saying prayers aloud.
We are grateful for you and for the spiritual wisdom you carry in this time of breakdown and breakthrough.
Let's keep feeding each other, supporting each other and working together for the Good.

The Harder Question of Giving: What are Communities Really Asking of Us?

Written by Lee Burton (they/she) the Director of Philanthropic Services at MakeWay, where they lead a Community and Donor Advised Fund program focused on advancing equity and community-led systems change.

Lee shares about her experience being in ceremony at Soul of the Mother, ISS’s ceremonial arm.

The New Vision & Purpose of Institute for the Study of Spirit
Today, the legacy of the Carold Institute takes root in a new form: the Institute for the Study of Spirit (ISS)—a national Indigenous women-led charity dedicated to healing, unity, and peace-making.
At its heart is a powerful call:
To cultivate a new Mind for a new Earth.
Under the leadership of Kahontakwas Diane Longboat, ISS emerges as a transformative platform that leads for self-determination lifting up spiritually centered leadership, spiritual training, and systemic metamorphosis for our times. Rooted in Indigenous knowledge and ceremony, ISS serves as a catalyst for a new paradigm—one that heals the wounds of colonization and capitalism and reorients us toward a compassionate relationship with one another and with Mother Earth.
The Institute is a call to all peoples throughout the Earth for a global shift in values to create cultures for peace, founded on our deepest truths to manifest love and justice for all Living Beings.
Through the Soul of the Mother Lodge, the ceremonial affiliate of ISS, ceremonies and traditional Indigenous teachings will support both personal transformation, organizational regeneration and the training for the next generation Healers. In partnership with Planting Seeds of Hope, (PSOH) and its UNESCO designated international pedagogy, ISS is building the spiritual, relational, and physical infrastructure for intergenerational healing and global transformation by connecting children and their families to the land.
A Note from Our New President
It is with humility and gratitude that I step into the role of President and Founder of the Institute for the Study of Spirit. I honour the vision and work of the Carold Institute, whose mandate to nurture, protect, and renew leaders of social and environmental change has left an indelible mark on Canadian civic life and beyond.

ISS will carry forward those enduring values of the Carold Institute—care, equity, reciprocity—while expanding them into a global spiritual movement. We are centering voices once silenced, uplifting Indigenous knowledge and matriarchal wisdom, and aligning networks of spiritual potency that the world urgently needs.
I warmly invite you to become part of the ISS family. Together, we will build a future rooted in spirituality, healing, unity and peace for the highest good of all peoples and Mother Earth.
With infinite love,
Kahontakwas Diane Longboat, M.Ed.
